Effects of Heat Gain and Heat Loss

Heat gain and heat loss constantly occur around us. Expansion and contraction are some effects of heat gain and heat loss in our daily lives. The results can be harmful if we do not ensure that the expansion and contraction can take place safely.

Have you ever noticed this?

 

The metal railway tracks expand when they become hot. The gaps in-between the railway tracks allow space for expansion. This is to prevent the rail from bending when it expands.
