How do we use the knowledge of Expansion and Contraction in our daily lives?

Use of Expansion and Contraction

• The expansion and contraction of air inside a hot air balloon causes them to rise and descend.
• When the lid of a bottle has been closely too tightly, we can open it by placing it upside down in hot water. This helps to expand the lid and we can easily open the bottle before it cools down.

What are some effects of Heat Gain and Heat Loss in our daily lives?

• Things expand or become bigger when heated. The increase in size or expansion is due to heat gain.
• Things contract or become smaller when they cool down. The decrease in size or contraction is due to heat loss.
